INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER & ITS TYPES

What is a computer? The need to keep a track of numbers led to the invention of different counting devices. Right from Abacus, the first counting device; many devices were invented, leading to the development of computers. The abacus was the first calculating device. Charles Babbage is considered to be the father of computers. He invented The Difference Engine in 1833. Ada Countess Lovelace was the first programmer.

Computer is a machine that can be instructed to carry out sequences of arithmetic or logical operations automatically via computer programming. Modern computers have the ability to follow generalized sets of operations, called programs. These programs enable computers to perform an extremely wide range of tasks. A ''complete'' computer including the hardware, the operating system (main software), and peripheral equipment required and used for ''full'' operation can be referred to as a computer system. This term may as well be used for a group of computers that are connected and work together, in particular a computer network or computer cluster.

MICRO COMPUTERS
These computers are small in size and cost less. They are usually designed for personal use therefore they are also called Personal computers.

They are mainly used in homes, schools, offices, shops, banks etc. Examples are;smart phones, tablets. These computers are given different names according to their usage.

Examples;-Desktop computers, Laptop computers, Tablet computers.

MINI COMPUTERS
These computers are bigger in size than that of micro computers. They have a higher processing speed and are costlier than micro computers.

If they are connected in a network several users can use it at the same time. They are used in banks, offices, supermarkets, universities and in big organizations.

Examples: Modern desktop computer.

MAINFRAME COMPUTERS
These computers are very powerful. They are big in size with a large memory and high speed. They are designed to tackle huge amount of data. More than hundred users can use a mainframe computer simultaneously. They are used in networked environment. Main computers are very expensive and can be used in large business organizations, universities, banks, scientific laboratories, airline/railway ticket reservation, state exchange markets etc.
Examples: IBM Z series, PDP-10 system Z10.

SUPER COMPUTERS
They are the most powerful computers with a huge processing speed. These computers are used for weather forecasting space research, satellite control etc.

Examples: CRAY-1, CRAY-2, PARAM, ETA A-10 etc.
